Portable Apps

This post is going to be off subject for me (this would be more for the Windows users), I Fix computers in my spare time and I have had people ask me about one of the USB drive I carry with me, What I have done is load it up with some useful portable programs for detecting virus’s and Spyware and general cleanup of a computer, Portable Apps is one place I use a lot it has lots programs categorized for you to find what you need quickly. The launcher will also alert you if there are any updates and ask you if you would like to install them.

here is a screenshot of the desktop app you can install on the flash drive, You can see it has an option (manage Apps) This will allow you to download them right to your flash drive if you ever find you need another app. There are a lot  of things that this is useful for one example is if you  use a public computer you can have your fav’s and stuff save right on the firefox browser app. One other cool thing is It will run in Wine.

Pendrive apps  is another very useful page loaded with apps there do not have the menu type launcher so you have to save them in a file so you can launch them from the flash drive.

UBUNTU Studio

In my last post I spoke about using Moovida and Enna for Multimedia, I find that Enna has one small issue that being that after using it for a while then returning to the main menu the menu is blank, but a restart of Enna solves that. Now Moovida on the other hand seems bug free and works very well for everything I have used it for, I like it for Photo’s. I also have been looking into Ubuntu Studio and today I went into synaptic and installed The Studio desktop, it has the theme and wallpapers for studio.

LINUX Media Center

In my last post I had talked about using an old system as a media center, well I may have changed my mind about XBMC and I am trying out a few different options,

#1 is Moovida I have been playing around with it and I like it for what I am planning. There are a lot of options with this and I am still setting it up as I type this post so I  will update this post in a day or so with some more detailed information.

#2 is Enna it uses geexbox libraries it is a little more difficult to set up and is a little buggy, I do however like the interface and the way it works so I may just tweak the program a little bit to fit my needs and see if I can clear it up some. If you try Enna there is a file in your Home folder .config/enna, open that in your text editor and you can change your weather location and tweak it a little.

These applications both run under Ubuntu however if you want a stand alone system there is a choice for that as well,Linux MCE , I have not downloaded it or tried it as it is 3.3 GB , I would need to read up on it some before I decide its a worthy download for me.

MY Linux Today

Hello My fellow bloggers, This is the new landing page for MY LINUX TODAY, I finally moved away from Blogger and got some hosting , I HAVE NOT imported all my images from my old site as of yet so that is the explanation of the garbled stuff in my old posts.

UPDATE: I have updated some of the images and things on here that i imported, I am not going to do a lot more of them right away unless someone is interested in one of my archived post’s, just leave a comment and I will try and repost or upload missing images.

Using a router as an Access Point

I am going to explain how I Used a WIFI router as an Access Point on an existing network, I have done this before but didn’t have the need for it again until recently. Its a fairly simple procedure but there are 2 major points you must follow in order to achieve success. my main router is a linksys WRT160N, I used a WRT120N as my AP, the first thing you need to do is reassign the IP of the router thats going to be the AP so it doesn’t conflict with your router I stayed in the range of my router (If your routers 192.168.0.1 then change it From 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.145 any free IP number will work) be sure to write everything down you will need the new IP number to log back in the routers web interface, now you will want to find DHCP server and turn this OFF, now you can set up the wireless to suit your needs, be sure you do not plug your Ethernet cable into the WAN port as we have disabled DHCP and will be using it more as a switch, any of the LAN ports should work. Now if everything is configured correct you should be in business.

Ubuntu 11.04

So today I made the jump and updated to Ubuntu Natty a release I will admit I did my research on it and tried the live cd first and was a little concerned with the Unity desktop but I updated anyhow.

I used it with the Unity desktop for a few hours and then reverted back to Gnome, I then discovered that I had become accustomed to Unity and for some strange reason It appeals to me.Now i’m sure its not for everyone and you do have the option of switching to the classic look on the login screen.

Here is a “http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/04/10-things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu-11-04/”great page with a lot of useful tips for anyone who decides to try for themselves. I am going to stick to the Unity desktop for a while and I will do a follow up post. I am also installing it on a family members computer this coming weekend, she is using Mandriva at the moment but wishes to try Ubuntu.
